What Happens When You Try 40 Feet

The longer floor of a 40-foot container takes twenty-one pallets in a single layer, already at 21.4 tonnes. The temptation is to double-stack for forty-two pallets and 42.8 tonnes, which sounds like efficiency but immediately exceeds the 26.7-tonne payload ceiling by a catastrophic 16 tonnes. The container will be flagged at the port, fined, and possibly refused for inland transport. Demurrage charges and emergency reworking cost far more than the freight saving on a smaller box.

The right pattern for track materials is therefore almost always a fleet of 20-foot containers, not a smaller number of 40-foot ones. How to Plan the Container Mix

Rubber-heavy containers typically double-stack twenty pallets to roughly 20 tonnes; mixed containers combine rubber pallets and liquid pallets to spread the weight. Avoid mixing too many loose drums in any single box.

Step three: align the inland trucking plan to the same weight limit. A standard road tractor-trailer in most jurisdictions shares the same axle constraint as the 20-foot container, so the working payload from factory to site matches what was planned at the port.
